Brave

If you’ve seen our Good Dinosaur review, you know what I mean when I say that brave is just another investor’s pitch. THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT MAKING THE PLOT GOOD, JUST MAKING THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS LOOK GOOD.

I mean, c’mon, this is the most basic and generic plot I’ve ever seen, a young princess who doesn’t want to be like her mother and get married, she wants to be Brave, bowing and riding horses. And how many times have Pixar personified animals or something else, IN EVERY MOVIE? And the mother bear one might be the worst of them all.

Maybe the ending and them reconciling would be good if I actually cared about the characters! It’s hard to get along with Merida when she acts like a toddler but is a master at anything; she’s a classic case of an unlikeable Mary Sue! And Queen Elinor is awful too! It’s fine if she goes from a one-dimensional villain to forgiving Merida, but it doesn’t help when she is a bear designed just for slapstick comedy in the middle! And literally every other character in the movie is just a bumbling idiot.

Sure the landscapes look good and so does Merida’s hair, but why should I care about that as the audience, I want to connect, relate, feel sorry, feel happy for these characters, but Brave just doesn’t let me do that, hence why it deserves this 12%.
