Ant-Man and The Wasp

We went from Infinity War to this? Seriously, Ant-Man and The Wasp feel so disconnected from everything happening in the MCU at that time. Let me remind you, this was after one of the biggest cliff-hangers in all of cinema history in Infinity War. It’s not like the movie is bad or anything, it’s just disappointing.

First of all, the stakes are way too low. The whole movie is about them saving Janet, who was stuck in the quantum realm for 30 years, and everyone thought she was dead until Scott survived The Quantum Realm in the first movie. I don’t care about Janet, because we had already settled on the idea that she was dead. Henceforth, the crew create a machine in their lab that they can use to save Janet, but they’re not the only one that wants the machine. There is a frankly boring and annoying side villain who is just a greedy businessman stereotype. There is also an anti-hero named Ghost, who wants the power of the quantum realm to heal her constant phasing. She is honestly a pretty good character and has great motivations, in turn making her very likable. This creates a three-way fight to get the lab, which is now miniature and portable in the size of a box. And this is where I reach the main problem of the movie, most of it is just them running around chasing each other as the lab switches hands, and while yes, this makes for some pretty funny moments, it means we don’t get that character growth or depth for Scott, when the movie is about him. For the entire plot, he just feels useless, apart from being a comic relief. I understand this because all the other characters like Hope, Hank and Ghost all get good character development, but Scott is just left out.

Overall, Ant-Man and the Wasp is a very funny movie, and has some great characters, but fails to focus on it’s main character, all while feeling underwhelming because of its placement right after Infinity War. We give it a 56%.
