Thunderbolts*
Thunderbolts*, also called The New Avengers, is one of the best Marvel Movies in recent memory.
Coming off the disappointing Captain America: Brave New World, we were not expecting the film to be too good. But, as we hadn’t had a team-up or Avengers film from Marvel for quite a long time, we decided to go anyway. And we are very happy we did that.
Thunderbolts is an incredible film that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, grappling with themes of depression and found family, while still providing some great action throughout.
First of all, the movie has a great cast. Each actor plays their character perfectly, each showing all their flaws and imperfections. Especially Florence Pugh, who plays essentially the main character of the movie, Yelena Belova. She shows all the emotions of the anti-hero and gives a heartfelt performance. Lewis Pullman also shows the struggles his character has very well, along with the rest of the cast.
Given a lot of these characters are returning, apart from Sentry, all these characters don’t feel like their personal story interrupts the overall story of the movie.
Now, getting to the story of the movie, it is done very well. The characters’ meeting feels natural, and their growing connection to each other throughout the plot is done very well. Unlike many Marvel movies, Thunderbolts doesn’t actually have a true final battle or Villain, with the third act devolving into Sentry’s mind to help him with his mental health struggles. But this does not drag down the movie or make it less entertaining; it just helps you to love and understand the characters even more.
They have to do this because of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who was the one who hired them all in the first place. She is trying to control Sentry, but when she is ‘defeated’ and they find her she brings them into a press conference and announces them as ‘The New Avengers’.
Overall, Thunderbolts is a fun, emotional, and great movie. We give it an 83%.
