Attack The Block
Hello everybody! You are likely here because of the John Boyega event, and I don’t blame you. This movie is something special, so we are doing a special review, both Archie and Lucas will be writing it, so let’s not ramble on for much longer, here is our review of Attack The Block.
Firstly, in terms of plot, it’s pretty simple, aliens invade and kill a bunch of people, but there are some twists that I won’t spoil that make it a bit more appealing. But what the plot shines through at is allowing for the horror and comedic elements to carry the movie. I’ll start with the horror elements, the plot allows for these aliens to kill everyone in horrific and gory ways, creating some scares and thrills, and with the plot focusing on young black boys in south London, it allows for funny moments with the strong British accents, and pop culture references that still hold up today to create a comedic tone that carries the movie.
The acting in this movie is very good, and the chemistry between the actors feels very natural, with some superb comedic timing. John Boyega does an amazing job as Moses, which obviously made this his breakout role, but we would also like to highlight the performance from Alex Esmail as Pest, who is by far the best character in the whole movie. Overall, the chemistry between the main cast is amazing, and the supporting roles were also hilarious, this movie had some very strong acting, and you can’t miss it.
The cinematography is all across the board in Attack the Block, with some great moments but also some bad. Some great parts that I’d like to point out was the slow motion chase sequence at the end, in which Moses, a black character, stands up next to a British flag, adding a racial message to the movie, which we think was a great choice. We also think that the horror cinematography was great and made for some genuinely terrifying moments. As to the bad, there were some moments where fast cuts and zoom-ins took away from the intensity, but overall the cinematography is well done by cinematographer Tom Townsend and director Joe Cornish.
Lastly, this movie is wildly entertaining, once again, the humour is on point, and many of the kills are done quite well. The bike chase sequence at the start is absolutely brilliant, with some really good suspense and action, and it perfectly segues into the more serious grounded parts without the aliens. Overall, this is a very entertaining movie, due to its comedy, suspense, action, horror elements and acting, making it a must-watch for both horror and movie fans alike. We give Attack The Block 83%.
