X-Men Apocalypse

When a franchise starts with First Class and Days of Future Past, two of the greatest superhero movies ever made, you’d expect the third film to continue the streak and change things up with a villain other than Magneto.

...

You’d expect that, wouldn’t you?

Yeah, this movie is a mess. Oscar Issac’s Apocalypse had so much potential in this movie but lacked the depth and definition that the character should’ve got. Instead of being a Darkseid-level threat to humanity, he ends up looking like a rejected Power Ranger whose powers are very undefined.

I reckon the script must’ve looked something like this:

Apocalypse uses the power that he has had this whole time, which he could’ve used a bajillion other times so far, to do something pointless and

The film is also so overcrowded with mutants that are hardly explored at all, and Mystique in a more leadership-style role does not fit, despite a trying performance from Jennifer Lawrence.

Back to Magneto, after Days, you’d expect him to stay out of trouble. Notice how I’m saying that you’d expect a lot of things. Yeah, that basically describes this whole movie, a crush of your expectations. But, as I was saying, Magneto apparently was living a quiet life in Poland or something, when his wife and child were killed, because Magneto must be in the movie, so he becomes one of Apocalypse’s “Four Horsemen”. Again, because Magneto must be in the movie.

I know I’ve hated on this movie a lot, but it does have a few things going for it. Firstly, Quicksilver’s speedster scene set to Sweet Dreams by the Erythematics is absolute peak. Don’t tell me that this scene isn’t the perfect blend of action, comedy and so much other stuff that this movie got wrong. Secondly... well that’s about it, isn’t it?
