The Marvels
I honestly don’t get why people hate The Marvels so much. It’s not that bad, I think people just don’t like Brie Larson, which is fair. It’s just a fun and goofy movie, with a villain nobody cares about.
The villain’s name is Dar-Benn. Did you know that? Definitely not. But you don’t need to, because the movie is short, being an 1 hour and 45 minutes long, so having a somewhat one-sided villain of someone who wants to save her home planet works, especially because it allows the team dynamic of the movie to really shine through.
Obviously, the weak spot was Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, who is still the most lifeless character you have ever seen, but the other two, Kamala/Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau are great. They have some great comedic moments and are genuinely cool characters. I was hyped when, at the end, we learnt Monica was sent to the X-Men timeline, and I hope they do follow up on that in the future, and Kamala is great, she is funny and feels like a real down-to-earth hero, so I feel like she has great potential for the future of Marvel and the Young Avengers.
But what about the plot? Well, they end up in an entanglement that means when they use their powers, they swap places, which makes for some great moments, and eventually meet up to take down Darr-Benn, and along the way end up on this planet when Carol is a princess and sings, yeah, that was a weird moment. It’s simple, and not amazing in any way, but it works. There is also a side plot where Nick Fury and Kamala’s parents deal with Flurkens on a spaceship, which was also one of the bad parts of the movie, but overall, I don’t think it’s as bad as everyone says. It still has a lot of issues, hence Movie Munchy gives The Marvels a 40%.
