Supergirl

Supergirl is the most MCU Phase 1 movie ever. The similarities are undeniable. You have a forgettable villain, great aspects, worse aspects, and so many more things you’re gonna notice going into this movie.

One of the best comparisons of this movie would be Captain America: The First Avenger. Now, listen, I’m very high on Cap 1. I think it’s criminally underrated, but it does lie around the 7/10 mark like Supergirl.

Back to the point, though, there are a lot of similarities between the two if you think about it. Krem is underused but, like Red Skull, is really good when he’s on screen and really creepy. Seriously, though, I wasn’t expecting him to kill multiple families and CHILDREN on screen. The films have some great comedy, but it is not their strongest suit by far. Speaking of suits, the Supergirl suit is gorgeous! There aren’t many changes from 2025, but, when you look at them side-by-side, the new one looks indescribably better than the old one.

Moving on, Jason Momoa’s Lobo has been a bit of a talking point and fair enough. The man was born to play this role and he doesn’t disappoint. He’s exactly what you expect, and that’s enough. He makes every scene he’s in that bit more enjoyable and that’s it.

Now, it is without a doubt that Milly Alcock is definitely the highlight of the movie. She is the Supergirl we’ve been waiting for, and her performance doesn’t go unnoticed (obviously). She has some great chemistry with Ruthye, who does get a bit annoying but has some great scenes.

On the topic of Lobo and Kara, the scenes in the bar where she beats the living crap out of everyone and when she meets Lobo are some of my favorite scenes in the movie. They’re exactly what I wanted from Supergirl: confident, chaotic, and freaking hilarious.

The scenes on Argo are also some of my favorites. I don’t know why, but they fit the tone of the movie perfectly while still feeling separate, and it just works. Which brings me to my next point. It's a pretty well-known fact that the DCU isn’t going to be all the same, tone-wise. Just look at the releases for the past year and the few years going forward. We had Superman, really bright and hopeful. Then, we have Supergirl, which gets surprisingly dark. Then, Clayface, a full-on body horror, which I’m really excited for, and we have Teen Titans, Paradise Lost, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and a ton of projects that are going to vary from a ton in tone. I think this will be great and it works really well for Supergirl.

This is also why, despite the mixed feelings on the movie individually, I think that the DCU, looking forward, is going to benefit from this movie a lot and will continue to go up and down in quality, just like the MCU. I’ve only seen it once, but I don’t see it having that much rewatch value, much like a Phase 1 MCU movie. I liked this movie and I think it’s a bit over-hated, but it isn’t nearly as good as Superman, but it will serve its purpose and has brought us some amazing elements that the DCU will keep going for a good while, and I’m all here for it.
